Activision really does not want you to play Brutal Legend 05 Jun, 2009 / Comments: 20

ATMachine reports that Activision has taken the rather baffling step of suing Double Fine to stop the release of Brütal Legend. Eh, what?

Apparently Activision thinks it still has a valid contract to release the game -- which I'm pretty sure they said they had no plans on releasing -- and... It can be assumed they want some or all of the $15 million they claim to have invested in the game back, but really? Seriously?

What has the world come with, what with new Monkey Island games and EA looking to be the good guy?

Update: Tim Schafer: "Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it. Oh great, now Beyoncé is going to sue me too."

I thought Activision already sued EA over this...

Thought about it and didn't, if memory serves.

OMG! Tim Schafer is my idol! Good response, Tim! I hope that this problem would be vanish and we would have the game soon.

P.D.: Sorry for my bad english, I'm spanish.

Thanks! I think Activision are being very opportunistic, it's not Tim's fault. And we need this game NOW XDD! Come on, Tim, you can win! XD

If what Activision say is all true, and that they invested $15million in the game and the rights were never formally relinquished after talks broke down, then this is really no surprise and Activision are doing exactly what any other business would do.

They might not actually be the bad guys here. Just protecting their investment and their property.

However there will be legal contracts for all this situation, so I'd imagine the truth (legal obligations) will come out pretty soon.

The brutallegend twitter page says it the best:

"Re: today's bummer news...in the words of the inimitable Ms. Beyonce Knowles, "If you liked it you shoulda put a ring on it"."

apperently EA has responded, calling it as ridiculous as "a husband abandoning his family and then suing after his wife meets a better looking guy."

Either way (aside from possible delays of course) it could be viewed as great PR for DoubleFine as two of the industries largest publishers are fighting over their IP

Great PR, if they manage to stay afloat. Seems Tim can't get any relief these days...

    that's it. I'm boycotting Activision
  • The Tingler on 04 Jun, 2009, 22:13…
It's okay, they haven't got any games worth playing anymore anyway. Just endless Call of Duty and Something Hero games...
  • neon_git on 05 Jun, 2009, 07:21…
Don't they have the European rights to the old LA stuff? Does this mean we can't buy the Monkey Island remake?
  • The Tingler on 05 Jun, 2009, 08:03…
Don't worry, that's not coming out in stores. Just download.
  • neon_git on 05 Jun, 2009, 10:27…
    Phew!

And I actually saw this on Facebook before Mojo. What IS the world coming to?
    But anyway, fuck you Activision.

    Come on.
  • ATMachine on 04 Jun, 2009, 18:38…
Heh, I actually learned this from SurplusGamer on IRC but figured Mojo needed to know. For the public good.
