Activision officially scum 06 Nov, 2008 / Comments: 17

Well that's what I think now, and I hope you will too after this post.

Speaking with investors, Activision Blizzard head Bobby "I hate games" Kotick explained why so many of Sierra's games (such as Brutal Legend) got dropped by the company.

Eurogamer has done a good job of summing this speech up, but we only really need the truth straight from the talking horse's mouth:
"With respect to the franchises that don't have the potential to be exploited every year across every platform with clear sequel potential that can meet our objectives of over time becoming USD 100 million plus franchises, that's a strategy that has worked very well for us."
Still doesn't explain why you're now holding up Brutal Legend from getting picked up by other publishers, though.

And now back to the more cheery GF celebrations.

    Ah boy..Douchebaggery at it's finest.

That is complete and utter bullshit! They just don't wanna give their competition a chance. Brutal Legend could be an enormous franchise if they let it.

You really want Brutal Legend to become a franchise? Bland, derivative carbon copies pumped out year after year?

Tim Schafer games are better left as one off's in my book.

I agree, neon_git. I don't get it when people say they want a Psychonauts sequel. It was a freaking awesome game. Why does it need to continue? Let Tim's brain start a-flowin'.

That is, in 2015, when Brutal Legend is finally released.

I don't want Brutal Legend to turn into a huge franchise, but the license has such a huge potential that it could if somebody decided they wanted to do that. And it would easily become THAT awesome classic game that everyone loves on ps3. It's a classic in the making. A cancelled classic, that is.

Not cancelled...churned. I hope they won't have to compromise on it.

Hey, look at the bright side, maybe we'll finally see Lost Vikings 3!

I can't (because of legal issues) write what I now want to do with that ***hole.

The words 'sequel potential' really makes my skin shiver.

They may have a misguided business model the will surely backfire on them eventually, but that doesn't necessarily make them scum does it?
  • jp-30 on 07 Nov, 2008, 21:30…
I think the 'scum' bit is in reference to holding up the game in legal bullshit such that it cannot be picked up by a rival publisher.
  • neon_git on 08 Nov, 2008, 10:32…
Ah, well yes, that would do it.

Yes, I remember that. Couldn't be more accurate, and also sums up the moron beautifully. Some people just need to shut up fast.

Did they end up canceling the Leisure Suit Larry?

Because as much as I love Larry games, that MAY have been a mixed blessing if they did.

Jesus Christ, those are quite the stipulations.
