100,000 grubs, coming up! 02 Oct, 2009 / Comments: 9

Those of you who've completed the third chapter of Tales of Monkey Island, "Lair of the Leviathan," will be familiar with a puzzle in which Coronado De Cava expects Guybrush to collect 100,000 grubs as part of a plan to escape the manatee's interior. The actual puzzle involves Guybrush coming up with a substitute, but you are nonetheless capable of delivering to De Cava one grub at a time, not unlike the ability to continuously collect a piece o' eight every time you polish the peg leg of one of the Men of Lower Moral Fiber in LeChuck's Revenge.

Well, some fans couldn't help but wonder if Telltale actually allowed for the possibility of coming up with 100,000 grubs (an arduous task estimated by forumers to take a month's time), and, using some sneaky techniques, managed to find out that it is indeed an alternate solution, with Guybrush and De Cava having a short smattering of dialog before the game cuts to the appropriate point later in the game. The proof lies within.

Talk about attention to detail.

Is it just me or does the whole thing look... well sound like a hoax? A simple hack to change subtitles, some self-recorded voiceover work and a quick edit of clips from the game?

Has anyone extracted the voice aoudio lines and/or the subtitle text to verify?

I just love small touches like this one. This might be one of my favourite little things about the Monkey Island series ever.

Episode 3 was pretty polished. I hope they keep this up.

Haha, I didn't really doubt that there would be some code to account for actually doing that, but I figured it would be more along the lines of "Really? Really?"

    That's hilarious though.

    No frackin' way

Cool, but it doesn't make sense that Coronado's crew is imprisoned after that.

That they're imprisoned sort of does, but their dialogue about Guybrush betraying the brotherhood wouldn't.

It's just a joke, anyways. I'm pretty sure no-one who plays the game for the first time will think of actually getting all that grub.

I did think about it. But Coronado didn't seem to count the grubs when I brought him the second one, so believing this method wouldn't work I started looking for a different solution.

Heh, that's excellent. I was actually wondering about the very same thing.

Good joke in there as well.
