Whining Begets Sam & Max News 05 Feb, 2004 / Comments: 17

Due to lovely reader feedback, I figured I should mention this here as well as the awesome website SamandMax.net (where it's already been posted for your viewing pleasure for a day now):

A couple actual in-game screenshots from Sam & Max Freelance Police showed up recently in an Australian game magazine called "Hyper." The screenshots show Sam & Max messing around in their office, playing with some weird techno gadget, and talking to a shady character out on the street. The screenshots also give a blurry preview of the game's user interface (which brings back Sam's hand as the cursor). Check it out some blurry scans of the screenshots at Unofficial Sam & Max.

So... what do people think so far?

It is hard to tell what the game is going to be like from the screenshots, but I know I'm excited.

These shots look great and I can't wait to play this game...hard to believe I've been waiting since '94.

The 3D is much improved over EMI, I think, though I still miss the darker, nittier-grittier look from MI2 and the first S&M.

The return of point 'n click is a *godsend*. Thank you Lucasarts!

Oh yes...and bring on the Maniac Mansion 3 already!

Somehow I didn't really believe that it was going to be point and click with a cursor, yet there it is.

The backgrounds and characters models look very good.

Yeah... Sam & Max 2 looks like it's shaping up to be an awesome game. It will be interesting to see how a next generation LucasArts point and click interface plays like. :)

Oh, these are A LOT... a lot cool, i guess... Thee-hee. Sorry Jake.

    Looks great, LucasArts!

Why is SnM.net so convinced these backgounds look pre-rendered? They're far too blurry to tell, but if there was any clue, I'd say that the writing on SnM's door looking like a normal texture. It'll be interesting to see, but I don't see why this couldn't be on-the-fly rendering with AA.

The perspective on the couch, lava lamp, desk etc doesn't change between the 2 different shots of the office despite the camera moving, indicating that it could very well be just scrolling a 2d rendered background instead of actually moving a camera in a 3d space.

    (Looks again)

Wow, no kidding! Looks very pre-rendered now you mention it! Interesting...

If you try to lay on picture on top of the other and wary the opacity of the upper picture, you will see that the window table and all that is shared are slightly different in each picture. It also looks like there is a slight difference in the view from the picture (look at the light to the left, and its distance from the window-frame). Also look at the ripped off part of the coach (to the right) and the pattern of the carpet: you can see a line of red before the white in the picture with the menu, but it goes straight to white in the other one.
So I'll say that these show slighly different angles.
(Wow, I just realiced how geeky this was)

I think part of it could be that the scan was stretched a little due to the fold in the magazine, but you're right about the little red square of carpet next to the left edge of the couch. Man, this is obsessing to the max. At least it means some people are interested in the game.

The camera could also be panning across the screen at the same angle. :)

If you connect all the corners of the notes on Sam and Max's bulletin board it says "Ron Gilbert".

    Sorry, old joke.

That's what we wanted to see. Good work Jake. :)

I guess that thing Sam is holding in the top picture thingy is that device used for replaying mini-games.
  • Jake on 05 Feb, 2004, 21:04…
Yeah. In PC Gamer Mike Stemmle said "Most of the min-games, once unlocked, will be replayable via the Gytgo, a techno-organic monstrosity that has nested in Sam's pocket. The Gytgo is a hypercute sentient handheld gaming organism that gives the player the ability to replay the mini-games encountered by Sam and Max, complete with new levels and power-ups."
