You won't be needing the next fifteen minutes of your life 18 Apr, 2013 / 15 comments

About a week or so ago some saintly nobody unleashed his collection of rare, vintage videos of LEC press coverage by a Los Angeles morning news station onto Youtube. Dave Grossman looks about seven. Prepare to freak out.

Update by Mr Manager: Fast forward 36 seconds into the first video to witness a "never" before seen scene from The Secret of Monkey Island. We assume the view is of the cannibal village. When confronted about the scene being cut, Ronzo had this to say: "We cut stuff all the time due to flow reasons. It's not always space. I don't remember the exact reason it went away."

Having lost much of my interest since 2010 in Telltale and LucasArts (RIP), I hadn't given any thought to this sort of LEC game development stuff for quite a while.... it's fun to see that a few surprises are still out there.

Does this get us a site update? :P

    Quiet, you.

When I read that Mojo "confronted" Ron, I like to imagine them busting through doors, windows and floorboards in pursuit of the truth: there is NOWHERE to duck, when the eds come a-knockin'.

Oddly close to what really happened.

Rumors of the scene appearing in Monkey Island 3a go unconfirmed though.

PS -- the FOA background screen itself also looks a bit different from the final product. More like a cave, with stalactites ,and less like a room with masonry walls.

That lost background from MI1 is amazing.

Check out the second video too, at the 1:13 mark. They're testing the palette of a background screen from FOA, and how changing it affects the principal character sprites. Said sprites can be seen at the bottom of the screen.

You can see that Indy looks very very rough, and Sophia has black hair! (Like her live-action model Collette Michaud, and the Elaine sprite from MI1 EGA.) Sophia became a redhead in the final game.

Is "Stemmle" just a screen name and "Stemarle" is Mike's real name?

I asked him that today, actually. And no, apparently they just really screwed up his name.

At first watch, I thought it was just a "seamed" version of the outlook/fort and the area prior to approaching the Great Monkey Head... but nope. You're right, it looks like something that didn't make the cut. Awesome.

That was my first thought too, but yeah, the footage is definitely "new". Looks like it's a view of the cannibal village?

I'm sure we're all way too excited about this. :~

First video, 35-ish seconds in. Looks like a scene that never made it into the final version of MI1.

Holy shit! I saw that the first time and I assumed it was that lead-up to the giant monkey head.
