Tomb Raider(s of the Lost Ark) 02 Apr, 2011 / 8 comments

Whatever it is that LEC isn't working on right now, they're working on it hard. Gamasutra reports a new high profile hire by LucasArts - Tim Longo, best known as the "creative and franchise director" for the Tomb Raider series at Crystal Dynamics.

He is said to be serving LucasArts in the capacity of Creative Director on "an unannounced project." A certain fedora wearing tomb raider springs immediately to mind as the likeliest subject of this project (and it would certainly be nice for the Indiana Jones game series to be elevated from its painfully ironic perception as lower grade Tomb Raider games in the first place), but I guess we can't be surprised if he turns out to be making light-saber Kinect games either.

Incidentally, the other day some crippled orphan asked me where he could buy The Curse of Monkey Island. I told him to check eBay and to screw off. Just thought that was too good a story to keep to myself.

Apparently he's worked at LucasArts before - he was lead designer/director on Republic Commando. Which is a good thing.

Nah, he's just doing a remake of Infernal Machine.

    Even better!

...it's probably just Star Wars or another crack at Indy.

I wouldn't have a problem with the second one. A key developer on Tomb Raider working on a next-gen Indy game? Here's my money LucasArts, make please.

The idea of a 'Euphoria' enabled Indy game had me excited last time (when it might still have become a PC game anyway). I'd jump all over an Indy game with more adventurey exploration than linear cinematic action. Grand theft indy! The adventure games always had that open world feeling. If Batman can do it..

He's worked for LucasArts quite a bit in the past has he not?

It's been baffling to me how a game company with the resources of the Lucas empire backing it has had so much trouble maintaining a clear vision and a family of talented creators in recent years. In my wildest hopes this unannounced project would be new IP and Tim Longo would pull things together and rebuild a game development powerhouse worthy of the rich LEC legacy. A return to innovation and fresh new ideas rather than depressing franchise milking.

This is LucasArts were talking about here. They havent done what youve described since 1997[i].

But you're right, it's probably just Star Wars or another crack at Indy.
