The Perils of Man Episode 1 is Out on iTunes 01 Oct, 2014 / 3 comments

The Perils of Man: Episode 1, the first part of the two part adventure with a game design by Bill Tiller and Gene Mocsy of Autumn Moon (and co-written by Mocsy as well), is now out for iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch for $4.99. Your five bucks will get you all seven chapters of The Perils of Man, as you'll get the first three chapters now in episode one, and the remaining four chapters at no additional cost once episode two is released in December.

The game is excellent, but if you'd prefer to try before you buy, chapter one (the first third of episode 1) is available on iTunes for free.

Update: If you don't have an iOS device, you'll have to wait a bit longer. According to The Perils of Man Frequently Asked Questions page, they are currently developing the game for Android devices as well as PC, Mac, and Linux.

Isn't this the game that is also an advertisement for an insurance company? AND it cost money?

I'm not saying it might not be a good game, I haven't played it, just saying, the idea sounds funny to me.

Yeah, and its development has certainly been tricky to follow, that's for sure. It was originally announced in August 2013, with no word about any involvement of Swiss Re (the aforementioned insurance company), then in September 2013, it was announced that it would be free because it served as an advertisement for Swiss Re. Then, it was delayed, only the first chapter is free, and Swiss Re is now simply called a sponsor in their FAQ.

I have no idea what happened there, but it looks possible the Swiss Re deal somehow didn't go as planned. Luckily, the game doesn't play like an advertisement for anything, and is actually quite good, so it looks like the change in funding might actually have been in the benefit of gamers for a change.
