(Hi Jason! Assuming that this is the Jason I'm thinking of!)

On the DVD front - If someone really wanted to push for it, I'd suggest bugging Shout Factory. The TV show was less a game spinoff and more a SCTV spinoff. I believe Shout Factory handles the rights to SCTV DVDs, but I might be wrong.

And, in the spirit of things randomly stupid, here's the house that was used for the outdoor shots in the series:
    http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&q=Toronto+Maps&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario&gl=ca&ei=jMZiTMWFNsP58AbBit2lCg&ved=0CBsQ8gEwAA&ll=43.680482,-79.408622&spn=0.004058,0.010386&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=43.680413,-79.408474&panoid=6SS8T0leTDzN0fzTyMlNDw&cbp=12,23.63,,0,7.51

Which is about as far away as you can get from the setting in the game, both in the style house itself and the location. Although, I GUESS it's up the street from some of the local universities and collages, but it's hard to drag a cheerleader up Spadina without the cops noticing you. Not that I've tried.

Okay, now HERE'S a bit of brain-bending quasi-trivia. I seem to recall that an issue of "The Adventurer" which covered the announcement of this series also mentioned that the same production company was going to be working on... wait for it... yes...

A series based on "The Secret of Monkey Island."

So, either my noggin's gone rotten from too many years spent thumb-twiddling in front of a computer screen, or the Levy series was supposed to be the beginning of an actual initiative to produce a series of LG shows based on their games.

Anybody else recall reading this, back-when?

Wasn't the contract in DOTT for royalties from using the Edisons likeness in the Maniac Mansion game instead of the TV show?

If you're a big enough nerd to be writing articles for Mojo, but you mainly recognize Jow Flaherty from a bit part in Back to the Future, you need an infusion of Freaks & Geeks, pronto!

And here I was thinking that I owned Freaks and Geeks on DVD - thanks for setting me straight!

It's probably the best show ever made about dorkdom (and one of the best TV shows ever made, period).

I remember tuning into this show as a result of a vague interest in the NES Maniac Mansion, which I had never played. Even though I hadn't played MM yet at the time, just watching it gave me a feeling that "This probably isn't very much like the game..or any game." I'd be interested to watch a couple episodes now that I'm (much) older and (much) more familiar with classic LEC games...

Are you guys crazy? The letter you post in the past is so you can collect the royalties from the TV show... I think ;-)

What's the joke in DOTT that brings the TV series into canon?

    I didn't remember either ;)

    From wikipedia:

    SPOILER?

    SPOILER?

    SPOILER?

"In Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, the 1994 sequel to Maniac Mansion, the TV show is briefly mentioned, serving as one of the plot points in which the game's protagonist must collect the royalties that Dr. Fred was promised from the creation of the TV series based on the original game (which, in the fiction of the game, was wildly successful and made millions of dollars)."

The one quoted in the article's header! In the same conversation, Dr. Fred also makes a remark along the lines of "I didn't make as much money as I expected from that TV show."

Not to get too nitpicky about it, but Joe Flaherty is American, originally from Pittsburgh. He just happened to be in SCTV which was otherwise a mostly Canadian show. I am not a comedy nerd!

This isn't really related to the article, but still, how do we view past features? Is that coming back anytime soon?
