LucasArts nearly released minus three games this month 31 Mar, 2011 / 8 comments

Not content with releasing potentially their last ever game in Lego Star Wars III, LucasArts thought it would be a good idea to stop people buying other games too.

Basically THQ had the Star Wars licence to produce Star Wars games for iPhone and iPad, including the cool Falcon Gunner which turns the iPhone's camera into the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. By tomorrow, Friday 1st April, the licence would expire and LucasArts would stop this and three other Star Wars games from being sold on Apple's store. This would mean that LucasArts would release one game and take away four, equalling minus three games being released. That's impressive even for LucasArts.

Fortunately however, sanity has prevailed and the games are safe on the App Store. However, this quote from Kotaku needs to be restated:

Calls yesterday and today to LucasArts, the Star Wars company's video game division have not been returned.

That's phoned, not emailed. I think it's safe to say that no one works at LucasArts anymore.

It's worth noting Craig Derrick's reply to us on the Twitter about this:

@mixnmojo I'm still here! =) Let me see what I can do or find out.

    That Guy

    1) The headline is misleading because these games were never LucasArts "releases,".
    2) LEGO Star Wars III is not LEC's last release, "potentially" or otherwise. We already know of that Kinect game under development.
    3) Does anyone really give a fuck about these Apple Star Wars apps?
    4) Was it Kotaku's calls that LEC didn't return, or THQ's? My impression is that it was the former and, if so, why should I care? How is it a story that a blog wasn't able to get an LEC rep on the phone?

Welcome That Guy, glad you could join us.
    1. So? I thought it was a good excuse to do a jab at LucasArts. Until there is actually some proper news, this is the best we get.
    2. Nothing announced, mate. When they announce something, then we can add it to the pile - until then, Lego Star Wars III is the last game they're dealing with.
    3. Nope. See 1.
    4. JOKE.

    A guy I know made this 'Sky Siege' helicopter app;

Falcon Gunner is a complete rip off.

    Just sayin'.

I think because Song of the South was a) super racist and b) pretty boring, even though it had some brilliant cartooning and animation.

I frankly don't expect anything from LucasArts any more. Though I was really enthused about re-releases, I hate/don't see the point of the Special Editions, and all of the real talent from those titles has moved on to one studio or another. I just wish they would stop canceling what few games they have a chance of redeeming themselves with! Also, I wish they would let Hocking work his magic.

No opportunity to rib LucasArts should be passed up and I'm sorry to once again be That Guy, but I take issue with this post:

    1) The headline is misleading because these games were never LucasArts "releases," certainly no more so than those Ubisoft Gameboy games or any of the other Star Wars titles that this site never talks about because LucasArts had no hand in their existence other than saying, "Yes, you may use the Star Wars license in exchange for a fee."
    2) LEGO Star Wars III is not LEC's last release, "potentially" or otherwise. We already know of that Kinect game under development. The lack of announced games in the pipeline is a valid thing to criticize LEC for so why undermine your point by making shit up? I know the tone of the sentence wasn't deathly serious but come on.

I just think LEC does enough actual suspect and mock-worthy stuff without us needing to present half-truths or to suddenly pretend like we care about games that we clearly never did because a situation surrounding them might sort of make LEC look bad (if you cock your head and squint your eye a little.) It makes Mojo look desperate and petty, is all I'm saying.

And yes, what is Clint Hocking working on? And why is it that Song of the South is to Disney what...every single non Star Wars legacy game is to LucasArts?

I haven't been following the news closely, so I've only just realized that everything's gone to shit again. All hopes for DOTT or Indy special editions are dashed. Here's hoping we're not all dead by the time the marketplace realities shift in our favour.

Why the hell does Clint Hocking work for Lucasarts?! What the fuck is he even doing if there's no games being developed?

Christ, I can imagine the scenario for any new CEO - they're headhunted from Pepsi or Der Sturmer, and they think "Wow, Star Wars? I'll take that!"

Then on their first day; "Bring me up to speed," and some poor bastard brings in the first day's worth of files ¬¬
