LucasArts' Secret History IV 30 May, 2008, 16:07 / 20 comments

If you've ever played Loom, you'll know how much quality and originality (an overused word, but the only one I have) this game has... and if you haven't played Loom, then perhaps you should!

Members of the first party will no doubt be interested in the fourth installment of our "LucasArts' Secret History" series, due to the trivia, downloads, and developer insights within... members of the second party should take a look at our review and find out what they've been missing.

As someone from the second group, I am now very desperate to get my hands on a copy of Loom (FM Towns preferably!) and play this mother. I mean, dragons, Swan Lake and a free audio drama... in the same game? Kiss me now!

Thanks to all the developers and gamers for sending in their thoughts, and to Dan Lee for the amazing art work once again!

    Great review.
But why wasn't my comment of the game added to the second page?
I sent that in as soon as I read the news!

D'oh! I always manage to miss one. It will be put there.

Thanks for putting me in there.
    It's LagOmorph though... ^^;

MarioColbert gets a gold star for mentioning Giygas.

    Great article!

    One correction though:
Page 3 - there's a sentence that reads "between you and he", when it should read "between you and him". There's no verb following that statement.

(e.g. Q: "Who's that postcard for?", A: "It's for you and me". Q: "Where are we going?", A: "You and I are going to Disneyland... (on a bicycle.)"
  • The Tingler on 30 May, 2008, 10:05…
    Now THAT's a nitpick!
  • counting_pine on 30 May, 2008, 23:51…
While we're on the subject though, is "the dawn of your seventeenth year" your seventeenth or sixteenth birthday?
  • The Tingler on 31 May, 2008, 22:47…
That would be 16th wouldn't it? For example, your 1st birthday would be the end of your first year.
  • MrSneeze on 30 May, 2008, 13:20…
Nitpicking - for a cleaner, healthier and more enjoyable reading life. Just say "NO" to the new Indy flick.
  • Kroms on 31 May, 2008, 05:45…
    Okay, that made me laugh.

You hard-working guys never seem to get much love for what you do. Let me give some LOVE! This was a GREAT feature! If I would have a heart, tears would be coming out of my eyes.

Another piece of trivia. Academy Award-winning sound designer Randy Thom (of Ratatouille, Forrest Gump, etc) had some hand on the sound of the awesome Loom audio drama.

Dammit I was so going to send in my thoughts in on this one; wrote them up and everything.

    Next time I swear.
  • Kroms on 30 May, 2008, 05:32…
    Send it in!! :D

Wow, that's an impressively thorough feature - I learned a lot.
A nice inspirational tale of "computer-ignorant artist vs undervisionary engine developers" thrown in there too.

I never really liked the voice acting much - it reminds me now of Radio 4 audio plays. But overall, it's still a great game.
That spiral staircase puzzle was particularly cool. It was genius, and it even made the player feel clever for figuring it out.

One thing missing: In ScummVM, in the debug console, you can use the "drafts" command to list all the drafts, their combination, as well as if you have already learned it or used it.

Great work guys, Jason and Gabez have excelled themselves this time.
  • Kroms on 29 May, 2008, 23:16…
Aye, thoroughly excellent and enjoyable read. Moriarty would be proud.

Being one of the lucky ones who managed to find a copy of the CD edition (for £2 no less!) recently I feel privileged! I still prefer to play the original though.

Probably the best History so far I think!
